Close-In Fallout
No Close-in Fallout data have been located for this test.
Town Data Base
The few recorded observations of radioactivity in the Town Data Base (TDB)
area lay to the east of NTS beneath the east-northeastward 3.0 km trajectory
track (see Fig.TS/4/TDB). These depositions were in the eastern part of area 2
of Lincoln County and were very light for this rather high yield (19 kt) test.
However, the high elevation of the air burst most likely accounts for the low
fallout values.
County Data Base
All of the depositions in the County Data Base (CDB) region lay to the east
of a north-south line through NTS (Fig.TS/4/TCDB) in agreement with the general
eastward movement of all the upper-air trajectories (Fig.TS/4/T). However, with
the trajectories spreading over a sector from north-northeast through south-
southeast, depositions covered the entire CDB region east of Nevada. Only
Lincoln County in Nevada showed any fallout. Deposition values were light to
very light over the entire region covered but were heaviest in southeast Utah,
beneath the 3.0 km trajectory, and northern Arizona over which the highest
four trajectories moved and/or circulated. Note the tight counter-clockwise
circle of the 5.6 km trajectory over northern Arizona. Northwest New Mexico
also had heavier depositions but the area was touched on the west side by the
11.8 km trajectory.
Upper-Air Trajectories
The five trajectories for this test split widely to the north and south in
two groups (Fig.TS/4/T), somewhat like those for test Charlie nine days earlier.
Again, the two lower-level trajectories moved far to the northeast, into Canada,
before turning southeastward across the northeast U.S., and the higher three
trajectories moved far to the south. These three trajectories remained close
together while moving to the south-southeast over El Paso and continued along
the mountains of Mexico to an area 550 km south of Great Bend Park, Texas,
where the Weather Bureau analysis terminated them. Since the Weather Bureau
showed the 11.8 km trajectory re-entering the trajectory map 290 km south of Key
West, Florida, moving to the east-northeast, the three higher trajectories were
extended for this report from the Weather Bureau terminations by use of upper-
air charts. They turned to the east in south-central Mexico, grazed the north
tip of Yucatan, crossed Cuba and entered the Atlantic Ocean. These three
trajectories (7.2, 9.1 and 12.2 km) were still very close together as they moved
eastward near Cuba.
The 3.0 km trajectory was extended (for this analysis) from the Weather
Bureau termination point 320 km northwest of Lake Winnipeg (middle of the fourth
day after detonation) southeastward across Wisconsin and New Jersey into the
Atlantic Ocean early on the sixth day (1800 GMT, 6 May to 1800 GMT, 7 May).
The 5.6 km trajectory started eastward from NTS with the three trajectories
above it then started a tight clockwise circle in northern Arizona early on the
second day, crossed Utah toward the northeast and reached northern Minnesota by
the end of the third day after detonation (1800 GMT, 3 May to 1800 GMT, 4
May). Turning slowly to the right, it crossed northern Lake Superior, crossed
Lakes Huron and Erie to the southeast then moved off the east coast (to the
southeast) over Delaware at the end of the fourth day.
The odd north and south split of the lower two and upper three
trajectories, respectively, was caused by a large amplitude high pressure ridge
in the northern U.S. combined with a large low pressure system to its south,
centered around Oklahoma. These systems extended from 3.0 km to at least 11.8
km. By chance, the 3.0 and 5.6 km trajectories became entrained in the high
pressure ridge to the north and the 7.2, 9.2 and 11.8 km trajectories were
carried around the west and south sides of the large Oklahoma-centered low
pressure system. Thus the splitting of the two sets of trajectories was
effected.
At their extreme north and south excursions, the northern and southern
trajectories were nearly 1650 km apart.
Depositions of radioactive iodine (I-131) across the United States from this
moderately powerful test never exceeded the light category at any of the gummed
paper (GF) radioactivity collection sites (see Fig.TS/4/F). The heaviest
depositions came down in light rain. Fallout was widespread over the country,
however, with only the west coast states, far southeast and far northeast
receiving no fallout. The light character of the depositions was probably due,
in part, to the extreme north-south stretching of the initial radioactive debris
cloud between the northern and southern sets of trajectories.
One very light dry deposition (10 nCi m-2) was recorded in north central
Arizona on the first day after detonation (1800 GMT, 1 May to 1800 GMT, 2 May)
which is remarkable considering the high yield, the GF site was directly beneath
the four highest trajectories (very little directional shear) and the GF site
was not far from the detonation site.
On the second day, only the lower two trajectories were effective in the
United States (the highest three were already over Mexico). Very light dry
fallout occurred in north-central Arizona, northeast Utah and southwest Wyoming
all associated with the two lowest trajectories extending from northern Arizona
to central Montana. Scattered very light dry depositions occurred in all the
Rocky Mountain states and western Kansas and Nebraska on the third day. Those
depositions in the north were associated with the 3.0 and 5.6 km trajectories
which were moving to the northeast in the states north of Colorado (Fig.TS/4/T).
These depositions were mostly delayed being behind the movements of these
trajectories.
On the fourth day (1800 GMT, 4 May to 1800 GMT, 5 May) fallout (very light,
dry) continued in the southwest but also very light wet and dry depositions
began in the midwest and east, adjacent to the 5.6 km trajectory which by this
time had accelerated and was recurving to the southeast into Pennsylvania (the
3.0 km trajectory was still in Canada). Very light dry deposition continued in
the southwest on the fifth day but light wet (heavier) and light dry fallout
covered a large area in the midwest and east, some of it as far as 830 km south
of the lower two trajectories.
Light fallout, both wet and dry, became widespread on the sixth day (1800
GMT, 6 May to 1800 GMT, 7 May) over the middle third of the U.S. (Mexico to
Canada) as well as the southeast and northeast (except New York State). A few
widely scattered light dry depositions occurred around the U.S. east of the
Rocky Mountains on the seventh day. No fallout was found on the next two days.
The persistent depositions in the southwest over the second through the
seventh days probably came from debris in the cloud segment extending between
the 5.6 km (far north) and 7.2 km (far south) trajectories that moved over the
western U.S. on the second and third days after the explosion. This debris
most likely fell into the low-speed circulation of a stagnating high pressure
area at about 3.0 km. The high pressure area presumably persisted over most of
the period examined and retained the debris in the lower levels in a
recirculating pattern. The slowly descending material was then deposited over
the several days noted.
The light (mostly wet) to very light depositions in the midwest on the
fifth day also most likely came from the debris in the 3.0 to 5.6 km cloud
segment that was on the north edges of the area at the time. It is probable
that northerly low-level winds carried the radioactive debris southward from
beneath the debris cloud segment allowing precipitation to bring
the radioactivity to the ground. The widespread depositions (wet and dry) over
the United States on the sixth day east of Colorado may have been due to
particles settling from the earlier up-wind passage of the cloud segment that
were brought to the ground by vertical air movements and precipitation.
Another factor causing widespread, although light, depositions over large
areas was the low pressure system in the central U.S. that entrained radioactive
debris from both the north and south sets of trajectories and carried it around
the central United States over several days allowing precipitation to bring the
radioactivity to the ground.
