Trajectory and Fallout Characteristics
Upshot-Knothole, HARRY
Close-In Fallout
The axis of the Close-In Fallout (CIF) pattern (revised version of April
1981) extended directly eastward beneath the only trajectory (5.6 km) that moved
to the east from NTS (Fig.UK/9/X). However, a minor CIF lobe extended about 80
km to the north-northeast beneath the lowest (3.0 km) trajectory (Fig,UK/9/T).
The pattern projected 320 km into southern Utah, covering Washington County with
rather heavy fallout, and extended into western Kane County. The main pattern
had a shallow deposition gradient on the north side of the axis and a steep
gradient on the south side.
Town Data Base
The distribution of the Town Data Base (TDB) fallout observations extended
eastward from NTS in somewhat the same manner as did the CIF pattern of
contours. High values extended across much of area 2 (adjacent to and east of
NTS) of Lincoln County. However, high to very high fallout values were recorded
in the southern part of area 1 of Lincoln County and furthermore they continued
undiminished eastward completely across Washington County, Utah. It is unusual
that such very high concentrations of fallout extend undiminished so far (about
280 km) from the detonation site (see Fig.UK/9/TDB). A detailed contour map of
the heavy fallout in the southwestern quarter of Washington County is shown by
Quinn et al. (1981) in their Fig. 10. Strong deposition gradients are shown
between local areas of higher and lower fallout values but the range of values
is consistent with the TDB values in Fig.UK/9/TDB. The heavy fallout in areas
close to the detonation site is consistent with the high yield (32 kt) tower
test Harry. Also, contribution to the very heavy close-in fallout was the
thick stem in the initial cloud that extended from the mushroom base to the
ground (List, 1954).
County Data Base
The County Data Base (CDB) map (Fig.UK/9/TCDB) shows very heavy depositions
of radioactive iodine (I-131) extended undiminished in intensity eastward from
NTS to southwest and west Colorado, a distance of about 665 km, and to northeast
Utah (Carbon County), a distance of about 550 km. The fan-shaped spreading of
the CDB fallout pattern from northeast through southeast reflects the
large directional spread shown by the upper-air trajectories covering that
sector (see Fig.UK/9/T). According to List (1954), a thick stem of radioactive
debris extended from the base of the mushroom cloud (8.2 km elevation) to the
surface. This thick stem was stretched laterally between the 3.0 and 9.2 km
trajectories as they moved to the northeast and southeast, respectively. At the
same time, the 5.6 km trajectory was moving directly eastward in southeast
Nevada, along southern Utah and into southwestern Colorado carrying the heavy
deposition of debris shown there in the CDB map. Gummed film observations
(Fig.UK/9/F) indicate that almost all of the moderate and heavy fallout shown in
Fig.UK/9/TCDB was dry and was deposited in the first 24 hours after
detonation. Heavy rain showers, that were reported between southwest Utah (Cedar
City) and Salt Lake City on the day of detonation (Quinn et al. 1981) may have
contributed to the heavy fallout shown in northwest Utah.
The light fallout in southwest Wyoming, southeast Idaho and northwest Utah,
and the very light depositions in northeast Nevada and southwest Idaho, cannot
be attributed to any of the upper-air trajectories.
Upper-Air Trajectories
The upper-air trajectories for test Harry initially fanned out in the
directions toward northeast (3.0 km), east (5.6 km) and southeast (9.2 and
11.8 km as shown in Fig.UK/9/T. The 3.0 and 5.5 km trajectories joined over
northern Illinois late on the second day after detonation while moving east-
northeast, then turned to the northeast over Michigan and entered Canada early
on the third day (1200 GMT, 21 May to 1200 GMT, 22 May). The 11.8 km trajectory
sped southeastward to El Paso, turned to the left across southern Texas, then
quickly crossed the northern Gulf of Mexico reaching the coast just south of
Jacksonville, Florida, about the middle of the second day. This trajectory was
independently verified by the observed track of a constant-pressure-level
balloon (project Moby Dick) floating at about 11.8 km that was only 80 km from
the detonation site at the time of the explosion. The balloon was tracked
across the east coast of northern Florida near the east-coast crossing position
of the 11.8 km trajectory (List, 1954).
The 9.2 km trajectory sped southeastward along with the 11.8 km trajectory
during the first half day then swung much farther south across Mexico to the
Gulf of Mexico. At the end of the first day, the trajectory suddenly
decelerated as it encountered a stagnant high pressure system centered over the
Gulf (List, 1954). The high pressure system persisted for several days causing
the debris around 9.2 km elevation to be retained in the area. Because of the
very light and variable winds in this area (western Gulf of Mexico), further
movements of the 9.2 km trajectory were uncertain.
Depositions of radioactive iodine (I-131) were very pervasive over the
United States for up to a week after the explosion (Fig.UK/9/F). A contributing
factor to the widespread and heavier fallout was the high yield (32 kt) of this
powerful explosion. A high percentage of the gummed film (GF) observations were
dry, possibly because of the heavy debris stem, reported by List
(1954), extending from the base of the mushroom cloud at 8.2 km all the way to
the surface. With a distribution of heavy debris from below 3.0 km to nearly
9.2 km, the debris cloud segment was stretched between the 3.0 km trajectory in
the north-central U.S. to the 9.2 km trajectory which moved to the southeast to
a point south of Brownsville, Texas. Note that the 3.0 and 5.6 km trajectories,
never very far apart, merged over southeast Iowa on the second day (Fig.UK/9/T)
then moved to the northeast together into Canada over northern Michigan. This
superimposition of trajectories concentrated the low-level portion of the debris
cloud. With precipitation in the area, this resulted in very heavy depositions
of I-131 in the north-central states on the second day after the explosion (1200
GMT, 20 May to 1200 GMT, 21 May).
Dry fallout was very heavy, on the first day after the explosion, in New
Mexico and Colorado and heavy (wet) in west-central Utah. Depositions on the
second day were moderate to heavy (but dry) west of a north-south line through
central Missouri to the Rocky Mountains and very heavy (wet) from Iowa into the
upper midwest (result of superimposed trajectories, noted above). On the third
day after detonation (1200 GMT, 21 May to 1200 GMT, 22 May), fallout covered the
U.S. from Nevada eastward, mostly dry in the west and south and wet in the
midwest and northeast. Widespread fallout distribution (mostly dry) continued
through the sixth day (1200 GMT, 24 May to 1200 GMT, 25 May) but by then amounts
recorded by GF observations were smaller.
The fallout that prevailed across the south from the third through the
sixth days very likely came from the debris that was stretched between the 9.2
km trajectory that had stalled just south of Brownsville, Texas, and the 11.8 km
trajectory that had moved to the east-northeast over Florida (Fig.UK/9/T). It is
believed that debris descended through the stagnant high pressure system lying
over the Gulf from the above noted cloud segment, was retained in the region at
intermediate altitudes by the light variable winds, then, after descending
further, was caught in strong southerly winds at low levels coming out of the
Gulf of Mexico and carried northward across the eastern half of the U.S. (List,
1954). The rapidity with which widespread fallout appeared over most of the
U.S. on the third day, and continued widespread through the seventh day (1200
GMT, 25 May to 1200 GMT, 26 May), can be attributed to the mixing and transport
characteristics of strong low-level weather systems migrating across the U.S.
during this period.
